Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rathmore, County Cork: a 57.7m earthen ring on an east-facing pasture slope, with a bank, scarp, shallow fosse and a trackway cutting across its interior. It is the kind of place where human hands made a boundary, and memory turned that boundary into a warning: keep out, keep back, do not disturb what the field has forgotten.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Circular area (57.7m E-W) defined by earthen bank (H 1.1m) W->NNW; scarp (H 1.5m) NNW->E; shallow external fosse to NW. Trackway crosses interior on E-W axis; no visible surface trace of levelled bank on S side of trackway. Interior slopes gently down to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
