Kilmonoge Ch (in Ruins)

In centre of graveyard (CO122-04201-), fragmentary ivy-clad remains of parish church of Kilmonoge, consisting of nave (int.: 9.5m E-W; 6.2m N-S) and chancel (int.: 6.8m E-W; 4.6m N-S). Sod-covered walls of nave stand c.0.5m H; walls of chancel stand to near full height, except E gable which is collapsed. Brunicardi (1913, 45) suggests chancel alone may have served as church in latter years of use. Collapsed remains of wall press and window ope in N wall of chancel. In repair 1615 and 1639 but abandoned by 1699 (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 224). According to O'Donoghue (1986, 177) 'known locally as Kilmonoge Abbey....founded by Longs of Mount Long', but no such monastic foundation listed by Gwynn and Hadcock (1988).
