Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathcronan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Rathcronan is a lost fort, not a mysterious one. The survey marked it as a circular enclosure before ploughs and pasture erased most of its shape. The field boundary still bends where the fort stood, preserving its ghost in the land.
On a SW-facing slope in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The monument has been levelled. Apart from a slight curve in the field boundary from NNE-E-SE, which presumably mirrors its circuit, it is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 17 January 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
