Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathcallan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ladysbridge and Rathcallan still hide a forgotten ringfort, though no exact spot remains marked. Earth and time erased the boundary, but the name survived in old writings. Perhaps a field, road or farm swallowed the fort, or perhaps it never matched the modern land at all. What is certain is that a rath once stood there, large enough to be noticed and recorded before it vanished.
Fitzgerald (1858, 23) records 'lios at Rathcallen, near Ladysbridge'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
