Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathbrackan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-five metres of raised earth and stone circle the northern half of Rathbrackan, while a shallow fosse cuts between it and its southern neighbour. The bank stands barely sixty centimetres high on an ENE-facing slope, yet the continuous ditch and sharp scarp preserve the shape of a home or stronghold built before written memory. People may have lived inside that narrow ring, watched the slope, or simply avoided the fort because local story calls it a fairy dwelling.
At the base of an ENE-facing slope. This is the N example of two conjoined ringforts. It is separated from the S example (LF010-014002-) by its fosse. It comprises a raised circular area (diam. c. 35m) enclosed from SW-N-E by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.5-4m; H 0.2-0.6m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 1m). The shallow fosse (Wth 5-7m; D 0.2-0.6m) is evident all round. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 17 January 2012
