Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Raheen More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on SE facing slope of rising ground just below summit of prominent hillock with excellent views to the SE & SW. Old laneway 25m to N as shown on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Circular area (approx. diam. 27m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank, with traces of an external fosse. Entrance gap (Wth 1.7m) at ESE, several modern gaps in bank elsewhere. Two large stones on SW side of entrance gap appear to represent stone facing of the entrance. Evidence for external and internal drystone stone facing of enclosing bank. A sub-circular depression in the WNW quadrant appears to be due to quarrying and a grass covered mound along its upper edge appears to be upcast. No surface remains visible of Man-made underground passage in ringfort. According to local tradition there was a 'cave' inside the ringfort. The interior slopes from NW-SE. Post-1700 field boundaries intersect the perimeter of the monument at N and SW as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Frank Coyne & Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 20 December 2016
