Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Raffeen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

O'Leary (1919) called the doubtful lios in Raffeen a ringfort perched above the railway cut. A stone fence marks the south edge while the north drops into the cliff where the line emerges. The exact spot has faded from memory, but the shape remains: a platform held between made boundaries and the raw edge of the earth.
O'Leary (1919, 34) refers to 'doubtful....lios' overhanging the railway. 'The south side is bounded by a stone fence and the north side runs alongthe edge of the cliff through which the railway is cut. Above this there is a platform and a second fence'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Raffeen, likely an early-medieval agricultural or defensive site, is associated with local folklore surrounding fairies and otherworldly beings. Its location near a cliff and railway suggests a possible alignment with ancient landscape features, though historical records remain sparse.
