Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Powerstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed. In Powerstown, a levelled circular area twenty-eight metres wide holds a faint ridge and shallow ditch on a south-facing slope. A moated site and another ringfort stand within eighty metres, suggesting a small cluster of occupied ground rather than one isolated curiosity. The fairies inherit the shape; the humans disappeared from the story.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; circular area (28m N-S; 27m E-S) enclosed by low rise (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m); shallow external fosse SW->NE. Possible entrance (Wth 6m) to SE. Moated site (CO025-07401-) lies c. 40m to W and ringfort (CO025-07403-) lies c. 70m to SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
