Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Pollintemple

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human dwellings, farmyards and meeting places from before written records. Pollintemple is no different. Its ring of earth enclosed a life, probably with a gap at the east for entry. The fairy label is a later invention, a story layered on top of a human home.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 21m) enclosed by a low earthen bank. An earlier report (OPW 1969) suggested that the original entrance was probably at ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
