Fairy forts and true ringforts still share one name in many Irish counties. In Pluckanes North the distinction stopped mattering when the earth vanished. A forty-five metre circle marked on an 1842 survey has been levelled into ordinary ground, leaving behind neither fence nor entrance nor even a dip for a finger to catch. What remained was a shape remembered by a line on paper, large enough to hold a house, a herd or a hundred small secrets, but no longer large enough to prove any of them.
