Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Pluckanes North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Pluckanes North held a thirty-three metre circular fort on a south-facing slope, visible on maps from 1842 until 1937. Farmers eventually levelled the earthworks for pasture, erasing the ridge that once marked human residence. The land retains no visible trace, yet the repeated survey lines suggest the fort resisted forgetting long after people stopped walking its edge.
Shown on 1842, 1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 33m). In pasture, on S-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
