Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Peafield, County Cork: a 30 m earthen ring on a SW-facing slope, mapped in 1842, partly levelled around 1981, with a man-made underground passage still recorded inside. The field may have swallowed the ridge, but the passage remains an invitation to imagine what people hidden or kept beneath ordinary pasture.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as dotted circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m); slight curve in field boundary in 1902 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. According to local information, remainder of site levelled c. 1981-2. No visible surface trace. Man-made underground passage (CO054-133---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
