What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Newtowncarrigans is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Newtowncarrigans, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies the crest of an east-facing slope and measures about fifty metres north-northeast to south-southwest and forty metres east to west. An earthen bank, nine metres wide and up to two point six metres high externally, defines the south-southwest and west edges, while a narrower scarp marks the north and east. A broad fosse and outer bank planted with mature deciduous trees surround the site, though quarrying and spoil have damaged parts of the structure.
At the crest of an E-facing slope. Irregularly-shaped grass and tree-covered area (dims c. 50m NNE-SW; c. 40m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 9m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.6m) SSW-W, which has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.95m) NW-N and NE-E (H 0.6m), but which has been obscured by spoil E-SSW and damaged by quarrying elsewhere. It is surrounded by a fosse (Wth of top 9.5-10.8m; Wth of base 1.5-7.5m; D 1-1.8m) and an outer bank (Wth 2.6-5.1m; H 0.7-0.9m) planted with mature deciduous trees SSW-N-ESE. A limekiln is built on the outer bank at W.
