Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Newtown (regun)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clearing the edge of that field for decades buried the fort under stone and soil, hiding a human boundary marker beneath ordinary farm waste. The earth resisted the clearance, keeping its shape alive under bramble and rubble while the village repeated the fairy name because the work would not submit. Under the dumped stone and tangled root, the ring still marks the exact place where human hands first shaped that land.
On a slight rise in undulating pastureland. This poorly preserved subcircular rath (35m N-S; 28.3m E-W) is defined by a bank that is overgrown with trees and bushes for most of its circumference. The banks is also obscured by field-clearance rubble which has been dumped on and against it. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 5 March 2018
