Fairy forts are earthen ringforts abandoned before human memory, yet local people still call them fairy forts because the shapes look like dwelling places for unseen neighbours. In Mountshannon West the earthwork stands as a rath, a round fortified house or exclusion marker from the remote past. The name suggests people once refused to touch it, not from fear of death but from respect for a place that seemed occupied.
