Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mountpallas

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

That is a fairy fort in Mountpallas, an oval of raised earth forty-one metres long and thirty-three wide, enclosed by a low bank and shallow ditch. The entrance has vanished, erasing the human door and inviting a different kind of entry. People may have lived inside, loved inside, bled and forgotten inside before the shape became a warning. The land kept the outline but removed the owner, turning a home into a rumor.
Raised oval area (int. dims. c. 41m E-W; c. 33m N-S) enclosed by a low, wide earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
