Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mossgrove

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An earthen arc still cuts across the pasture, its bank rising 1.4m and dropping into a shallow ditch. People lived there before the field fence swallowed the shape, perhaps in the very soil now marked The Lisins. The fort has lost most of its circle, but the remaining curve still points toward the west slope where it was built.
In pasture on W-facing slope. Arc, formed by earthen bank (H 1.4m) NNE->SW,with external fosse (D 0.6m) NNE->S. Bank incorporated into field fence system; stone faced in parts. According to Ó Ríordáin (1931, 62) field called 'The Lisins'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
