Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monktown (moyfenrath By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Monktown holds a fifty-metre earthen ring with a broken seam and a sharp L-shaped cut at its heart. The missing soil may have formed a underground passage rather than a common ditch. People likely dug through living earth to reach a hidden chamber, then left the hole open for the fairies to breathe.
Located on what is probably a rise in a fairly level landscape. The cropmark of a circular area (diam. c. 55-60m) defined by a single fosse feature is visible on Google Earth (29/06/2018; 14/07/2019). The fosse is largely absent at SE and NW but an L-shaped excavated feature at the centre consisting of a pit (dims c. 20m E-W; c. 5m N-S) with a narrow pit extending N (L c. 12m) from its E end is possibly a Man-made underground passage. It was first reported by Jean Charles Caillere. See the attached image from Google Earth 14/07/2018 Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 5 June 2019
