Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monksfield

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic is dead in Monksfield. The fairies fled when men dragged steel through their fort, killing the wonder that shaped the district.
In rough pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 241, no. 126) as a very denuded circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 24.4m) defined by a bank (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.54m; ext. H 0.67m). It was subsequently levelled during field-clearance operations and no visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 February 2018
