Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Moneycusker

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Moneycusker is a roughly circular earthen ringfort on a SW-facing slope in County Cork. It has a 3.5m high bank, external fosse, SSE entrance revetted by two large stones, and an interior shaped to the hillslope. The name suggests people once saw it as a fairy place, but the structure is a human-made rath: a defended or enclosed home cut into the land.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Roughly circular area (36m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (max. int. H 3.5m) with external fosse (D 2.4m).Stone wall atop bank to NE where incorporated into field fence system. Fosse best preserved to NE and E; sides more eroded and gradual elsewhere. Entrance (Wth 4m) to SSE, revetted to E by two large stones embedded inbank; causewayed. Interior cut into hillside to NE, raised on SW side to compensate for hillslope. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
