Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Milltown Britton

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Milltown Britton is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Milltown Britton, County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupies flat pasture beside a stream flowing west-northwest to east-southeast about 10 metres southwest of the monument. Ploughing removed much of the structure, but a raised, roughly circular area 30.2 metres north-south and 29.6 metres east-west remains discernible. A scarp defines the edge, reaching 0.25 metres high in the northwest sector, where a slight external ditch 2.5 metres wide and 0.12 metres deep is also visible.
On flat, level ground with a stream flowing WNW-ESE c. 10m SW of ringfort, in pasture. The stream has been channalised into the field ditch. The ringfort has been ploughed out but is still discernible as a raised, roughly circular area (diam. 30.2m N-S; 29.6m E-W), defined by scarp which is best preserved in the NW sector (H 0.25m). Also in this sector there is a slight trace of an external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.12m). The E quadrant extends out to the field boundary, immediately E of the ringfort, the ditch of which is waterlogged. This field boundary kinks out slightly to respect the enclosure. The field boundary between the stream and Grangebeg townland boundary to N has been removed. The monument was visited in 1982 and was described as being in poor condition with a very denuded bank and an infilled and waterlogged fosse, diam. 33m (Cahill 1982, unpublished).
