Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Manning

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Manning, County Cork: a vanished earthen ringfort on a sloping plateau above the Funshion River valley. Its curving boundary still appears on the 1934 map, but ploughing and changed fields have taken it from sight. The land keeps the shape in memory while the valley below moves on.
In tillage, near the edge of a gently sloping plateau, overlooking the Funshion River valley. The ground level drops steeply a short distance to the S, to the valley floor. A curving field boundary (C 39m) SSW-NNW, indicated on the 1934 OS 6-inch map, suggests a rath associated with a Man-made underground passage (CO027-212002-). This field boundary and others in the vicinity have been removed and there are no visible remains of the possible rath. (pers. comm. Eamonn Cotter) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
