Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Listobit

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often human homes misread by later fear, and Listobit may have been one of them. A circular bank and shallow ditch marked the edge of a small residence or workshop, perhaps with a doorway facing east to catch the first light. The land has since been levelled, but the shape remains in memory: a round room built by human hands, not a palace for invisible creatures.
At the base of a gentle S-facing slope in low-lying pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised subcircular area (c. 45m N-S; c. 40m E-W) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with fragmentary traces of a shallow external fosse. The original entrance was at E. It has since been levelled and is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
