Fairy fort in Lisgorran, County Monaghan: a subcircular earthen rath at the north end of a drumlin ridge, marked on maps since 1793. Its bank still stands about two metres high in places, though hedge and grass have worn the memory smooth. People may have kept livestock, hidden during trouble, or simply lived where the ridge offered view and shelter. The fairies, according to local story, took the site later and made it theirs.

Located at the N end of a NNE-SSW drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a subcircular, grass and scrub-covered area (dims 43m E-W; 38m N-S) that is slightly domed and defined by an earthen bank (at NNE: Wth of base 3.6m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 2.4m) and hedge that has almost disappeared NW-N. There is no visible fosse and the original entrance is not identified. A farm track is outside the bank SW-WNW and there are old farm buildings outside the perimeter SE-SW.
