Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisanisky

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and the fairies fought over Lisanisky, with Marianne building a fort and the fairies digging it to pieces. They exhausted each other, so Marianne flew away and the fairies kept the ruined site. People still call it a fairy fort because the fairies won the last move.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 38m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse which was largely infilled during the course of land reclamation in the late 1960s (local information). Original entrance at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
