Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Laughil (rathcline By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not places to poke or mock. They belong to the hidden people who still own the land beneath human skin. If you want to leave the fort, ask permission first. The doorway may be invisible, but it is never forgetful.
On a N-facing slope in pasture. Not indicated on the 1837 or 1883 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised subcircular area ( c. 23m NW-SE; c. 21m NE-SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone. There was no trace of a fosse. The S and W sides were fairly straight where the bank was incorporated into field boundaries. The original entrance was not recognisable. Immediately outside the bank at NW was an old quarry and a depression outside the bank at S was also probably the result of quarrying. The rath has since been levelled and is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
