Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Largan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains in Largan, though a 35-metre circular bank once stood there. It borrowed part of the Worm Ditch or Black Pig's Race as a rampart, then disappeared under levelling. What is left is a absent shape: a room the land forgot it had built.
An earlier report (OPW 1974) described a raised circular area (int. diam. c. 35m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and vague traces of a fosse. From NW-N-NE a portion of the adjacent linear earthwork 'The Worm Ditch or Black Pig's Race' (CV031-004----/CV032-012----) was utilised as a rampart and at NNE the fosse had been cut through the earlier earthwork. Original entrance was not recognisable. Site has been levelled. Not visible at ground level The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Largan is a likely early-medieval agricultural or defensive enclosure, characterized by a circular raised area with a surrounding bank and fosse. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, while the nearby "Worm Ditch" may indicate broader prehistoric or early historic landscape features.
