Knockardtry holds a earthen ringfort, a circular defensive structure built by human hands during the medieval period. The local name Fairy fort suggests people once believed the site belonged to unseen creatures rather than neighbouring families. That contradiction is not an error, but a clue. Human fear, wonder and memory often write themselves into landscape names before history gives them dates.
