What is recorded here
Knockaloura West holds a thirty-one-metre circular rath on a prominent rise above low-lying grassland, marked by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank was quarried from north to east, leaving an irregular scarp to define that edge, while the outer bank remains strong from south-southwest through west to north. Local tradition points to two natural boulders nearby as bullauns, adding a layer of wonder to the practical defence.
On a prominent rise in otherwise low-lying grassland. Circular rath (D 31.5m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank has been quarried out from N to E where an irregular scarp forms the enclosing element. The fosse and outer bank are best preserved from SSW through W to N. Entrance gap at E. There is a small hollow within the interior. According to local tradition, two boulders (entirely natural), lying c. 350m to NE and c. 120m to S respectively, are regarded as bullauns.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
