Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilva

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilva in County Cork once held two earthen ringforts, now levelled and forgotten. Power recorded them in 1940, but even that marker cannot point to the exact ground where people lived, loved and argued beneath open skies. The earth took back what hands built, leaving behind a vacancy so complete it becomes a kind of challenge: to imagine the shape of a life that disappeared without a trace.
One of two levelled ringforts (CO076-086---) in this townland. Recorded by Power (1940, 25). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
