Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilpadder South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilpadder South, County Cork. Bowman (1934, 559) recorded a levelled single-ramparted fort, roughly thirty-nine yards across, sitting on land belonging to Mrs. McAuliffe. The earth has swallowed the exact spot, yet the fort likely guarded a narrow valley or marked a boundary between neighbours. Its disappearance is not a loss but a reminder that human marks are temporary, even when built to outlast memory.
Bowman (1934, 559) recorded levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 39yd) on Mrs. McAuliffe's land. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
