Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilnahulla More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilnahulla More held a circular earthen fort wide enough for a small household, though ploughs and time have reduced it to a low eastern arc. The fairies never lived there, but people did, building a rampart strong enough to mark the slope before memory faded. What remains is a shallow curve in pasture, quiet enough to believe the fort is gone, yet wide enough to prove it stood.
In pasture, on SSE-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as hachured arc (E->W) showing scarp on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; arc (C c. 36m) formed by low rise survives E->W. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 476) as levelled, single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 33yd) on J. O' Connor's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
