Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmacurrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human inventions, not supernatural ones. They are small, circular, earthen strongholds built by ordinary people. The field marked in Kilmacurrane was one such place. It has since disappeared under cultivation, but its shape and purpose remain clear in the local landscape.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Depicted as small roughly circular field (diam. c. 18m) at junction of four fields on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled; no visible surface trace of site. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 253) as single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 21yd; bank H 3ft to 5ft H; fosse infilled) on Mrs. O'Rahilly's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
