What is recorded here
Killinane holds a levelled earthen ringfort beside a newer stronghold, preserving a circular space where people once lived or played long before the land changed. The faint saucer and ghost of a ditch suggest a busy threshold rather than a dead field, perhaps marking a boundary between neighbours or a place set apart for ritual. Local tradition still calls such rings fairy forts, not to dismiss human hands but to admit that the origin has slipped into mystery. The fort stands in pasture under an open sky, waiting for someone to imagine the lives that shaped its curve.
In pasture, just below crest of N-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, with lime kiln marked on N bank. Levelled; circular saucer-shaped area (diam. 36.4m) enclosed by slight rise with faint trace of external fosse to NW. Ringfort (CO015-036---) lies c. 160m to E.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
