What is recorded here
Killavallig holds a levelled fairy fort inside an early ecclesiastical enclosure, proving that human hands and local belief both shaped the same circular ground. The fort measured about forty metres when surveyors first marked it, yet ploughs and patience have reduced it to a faint shadow in grass. A large grinding stone lies nearby, perhaps carried from the fort when people stopped keeping its edge sharp. The place still works like a sieve, dropping facts but holding life, which is why it must be judged by what it preserves rather than what it reveals.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope, within early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO023-14601-). Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; circular area (38m E-W; 37m N-S) defined by low rise (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.45m). Faint trace of circular enclosure visible as shadow site in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R720). According to Bowman (1934, 42), 'mill grinding-stone, diam. 3 feet 6 inches' found 40 yards from site; possibly same stone now in grounds of Killavallig House. Possible ringfort (CO023-14604-) lies c. 15m to ESE.
