Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killany

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall remains on the hilltop, yet the ground still holds the shape of a forgotten ring. The fort has been levelled, but an underground passage nearby suggests people once cut through solid earth to hide, move or worship. Killany kept its own secret chamber while the sky-facing wall disappeared.
On top of a hill. Site of levelled ringfort (McCarthy 1977, 271). No visible surface trace. Associated with Man-made underground passage (CO111-067002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
