Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilgilky South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilgilky South once held a thirty-metre earthen ring on a north-west slope, visible enough for surveyors to map in 1842 but vanished now beneath pasture and forgetting. Bowman walked the land in 1934 and measured twenty-six yards of rampart on Dennehy’s ground, proving the earth still remembered its own shape. That much of a fortress can disappear without a single stone breaking suggests human pride is smaller than it believes, and soil keeps more than memory does.
In pasture, on NNW-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace of site. May be levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 26yd) recorded by Bowman (1934, 55) on M. Dennehy's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
