Kilgarriff holds a levelled ringfort beside a possible second fort, marking the hill as a place of early human defence and domestic life. The earthwork still appears as a circular cropmark, proving that the shape survives even when the ridge has been worn flat. The fairies may have taken the name, but the circular enclosure and nearby rath point to people who lived, worked and defended the hill before the pasture reclaimed the edge.

In reclaimed pasture 50m E of the summit (579ft/176m) of a hill. Possible levelled ringfort (LI057-026----) lies 95m to SW. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a circular enclosure. It is shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised circular-shaped area (diam. c. 24m) defined by a scarp.
