Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcrea

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcrea is a ringfort cut in two by a railway, its oval mound split into left and right halves along the old track bed. The line did not merely pass through; it opened the fort like a drawer, exposing what had been hidden beneath pasture and time. Both halves remain visible beside the disused line, preserving the shape of a place that resistance could not erase.
In pasture, on S side of River Bride. Hachured as oval enclosure (c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; railway line cut through enclosure on E-W axis on 1903 and 1943 OS 6-inch maps. Irregular mound survives on each side of disused railway line. 'Known locally as a lios' (Hartnett 1939, 160). Man-made underground passage (CO084-026002-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
