What is recorded here
No, that is not a fairy fort. It is a human dwelling, probably medieval or earlier, built by ordinary people who lived there, worked the land and left a measurable circle behind. The fairies entered later because people preferred a magical explanation to admitting they knew nothing about their own ancestors.
Internal diam. 23m N-S, 21.5m E-W
A roughly circular univallate rath situated on a gentle NE facing slope, in undulating pastureland at the foot of the Knocknanacree ridge. The earthen enclosing bank is generally 1m high internally and 1.25m high externally, but it has been reduced to a low scarp along the W sector and is disturbed along the NW sector where it is abutted by a stone field-wall. Its inner face is revetted with drystone masonry in places. An external fosse and low upcast outer bank are visible along the NE sector, and the fosse is also discernible outside the field wall in the NW sector. The fosse is 2.5m wide and .75m deep and rises 2.1m to the crest of the inner bank. The outer bank is .5m high. The 1.2m wide entrance gap faces due S and is lined on its W side with drystone masonry.
A possible hut site occupies the centre of the enclosure. It consists of a band of small stones enclosing an area 3.5m square and open to S. The only other feature visible in the interior is a depression in the NW sector which measures 2.5m in diameter and .5m in depth.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 459. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
