Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gullane East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne Spender (1835-1907) wrote from the house at Gullane East. The completed building stands beside the old fort, not buried beneath it. She recorded local life in that area. The fort remains visible in the landscape, while the house and her journal give the place a human date.
This univallate rath is situated in gentle sloping pastureland. However, the site is completely overgrown and detailed measurements could not be taken. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 134. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
