Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortroe (connello Lower By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gortroe, County Limerick: an oval earthen ringfort, 29 metres east-west and 25.9 metres north-south, set on a gentle south-east slope above the river valley. Its scarped edge still stands one metre seventy high in places, though the south arc has worn low and a broad gap opens toward the south-west. Cattle graze the level interior now, but the shape remains clear enough to walk around and imagine: a small defended place, made human, then abandoned to grass and rain.
In pasture, on gentle SE-facing slope into river valley. Oval area (25.9m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.7m; Wth 9.5m), best preserved E->S but lowers along S arc (H 0.55m). Gap is scarp at SSW (Wth c. 6m). Level interior under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
