Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortnagross (duhallow By., Ballyclogh Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne said the fort was a chamber pot for a giant, but the circular ditch and inner bank still mark a human home. It is a fairy fort in Gortnagross, an earthen ringfort beside duhallow By. and Ballyclogh Par., large enough to hold fire, tools and argument. People may have lived there before fear gave the ground to legend.
Circular enclosure visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989) as cropmark of fosse (diam. c. 47m) with second fosse visible to NE, SE and S->NW; cropmark of internal bank visible in second aerial photograph (GSIAP, W410). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
