Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortmore (glenquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gortmore, County Limerick: a 25 m circular rath with two earthen banks, two fosses and a hidden interior, still standing in level pasture. The name suggests people once refused to explain it, preferring wonder to measurement. Both are possible: human hands built it, and memory changed the shape until it became a fairy place.
In level pasture. Circular area (diam. c. 25m) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with intermediate fosse (Wth 2.6m) and external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 2m). Both inner bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.95m) and external bank (int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.5m) covered by dense overgrowth, which also completely masks interior. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
