Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteenalomane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gorteenalomane held a thirty-metre earthen ring on a north-facing Cork slope until 1983, when ploughs erased the last visible trace. It may have been a human home, a boundary marker or a forgotten trading place, but the loss of evidence turns that certainty into speculation. The earth keeps no witness now, only the memory of a circle that once broke the grass.
In rough grazing on break in N-facing slope, view limited by high ground to S and NW. Hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on OS 6-inch map (1902). Levelled 1983; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
