What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortavehy East, County Cork, Ireland: Broker (1937, 49) recorded a big fort occupying about one quarter acre on Edmond McSweeney's land. The exact spot has slipped from local knowledge, but the size suggests a substantial earthwork rather than a minor mound. People may have lived, hidden or gathered there before the name faded, while the fairy label reminds us that ordinary places still resist full explanation.
According to Broker (1937, 49), fort on Edmond McSweeney's land '1/4 acre, big fort'. Exact location not known.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
