Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortalough

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gortalough holds a faint oval scar in level Galway grassland, forty-eight metres long and less than a metre high. It is a rath, perhaps old enough to be forgotten by the people who first lived inside it. The boundary has softened into a shallow dip, yet the shape remains clear enough to walk around and imagine. A house, a pen or a small defended life may have filled that circle before the land took it back.
In level grassland. Very poorly preserved oval enclosure (48.5m E-W; 38m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.7m). Probably a rath. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 11 March 2019
