Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glenlara

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy ever touched Glenlara. Human hands built the dual banks, cut the fosses and dug the hidden passage beneath the reeds. The circle measures twenty-two metres across, holds its shape on a gentle west-facing slope, and still separates inside from outside after every forgotten century.
In grazing land, on gentle W-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (22.4m E-W; 22.3m N-S) enclosed by inner earthen bank (int. H 0.3m) NE->SE; scarp elsewhere; intervening fosse; outer earthen bank (max. H 0.7m); external fosse (D 0.1m) to NW. Banks grass covered; interior surface overgrown with reeds. Man-made underground passage (CO014-07302-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
