Church of the Holy Spirit

Freestanding Roman Catholic church, dated 1914, oriented north-south and having altar end to north. Seven-bay long elevations, half-hexagonal apse, porch to north-west, and lower flat roof additions to east. Pitched slate roofs, spired to apse, with terracotta ridge tiles, cast-iron cross finials to ends of ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative fixings. Painted smooth rendered and roughcast rendered walls having painted rendered plinth course to long walls with buttresses between windows. Render Greek cross set in circular recess to south gable. Lancet windows to long walls and upper south gable, having render reveals and stained glass. Circular window opening to lower level of south gable, with stained glass. Two-light pointed arch window openings to apse, with stained glass. Pointed arch door opening to south end of west long wall, and triangular-headed doorway to porch, with replacement timber battened doors. Interior has half-glazed timber panelled door to lobby, with stained glass, hexagonal limestone baptismal font, timber altar and timber gallery with timber winder stairs. Burial ground to south, with some ornate grave markers, and freestanding rendered openwork bellstand. Smooth rendered boundary walls having date plaque and terminating in square-plan rendered piers with cast-iron gates and plaque.

This building is of social importance to the small village of Taur. Its mixed roughcast and smooth rendered elevations add colour and texture to the structure. Its simple form and small scale are appropriate to its rural site. The associated freestanding bell tower is in a strong geometric style evocative of the Art Deco style which became popular soon after this church's construction.
