What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, circular defences or dwellings from the distant past. The fairy name is a later story layered on top. In Glendarragh the ringfort stood beside a stream in open pasture. It had a bank, a ditch, and a clear circular shape. Farmers knew the shape before surveyors drew it. Then boundary removal in 1996 levelled most of it. What remains is a shallow scarped edge and a faint external ditch. The stream cut one side of the circle long before people forgot the rest.

In level pasture, on S bank of stream. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, was levelled in 1996 when nearby field boundaries were removed. Now evident as scarped edge (H 0.5m; Wth 4.1m) NNE->SSE, with external fosse (D 0.25m; Wth 5.9m) ENE->ESE. Steep-sided gully of stream appears to have defined edge of enclosure NNW->NNE.
